1. Meaning
Storage Tank: A container for storing various liquids, gases or solid materials. It is widely used in many fields such as industry, energy, and chemical industry, such as oil storage, chemical raw material storage, and drinking water storage. Its size, shape, and material vary according to factors such as the nature of the stored materials, storage volume, and storage conditions.
Steel Tank: A tank made of steel as the main manufacturing material. The strength and toughness of steel make it suitable for bearing certain pressures and storing large amounts of materials. It is one of the most commonly used types of tanks.
2. Characteristics of Steel Tanks
High Strength: Able to withstand large internal pressures and external loads. For example, when storing high-pressure gases or large amounts of liquids, steel tanks can ensure the stability of the structure. Like large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks, the internal pressure is high, and the steel structure can safely contain these high-pressure gases.
Good durability: Steel has good corrosion resistance (after proper anti-corrosion treatment) and wear resistance. In harsh environmental conditions, such as the seaside (with high humidity and salinity) or chemical production areas (where corrosive gases or liquids may leak), steel tanks can be used for a long time after being treated with appropriate anti-corrosion coatings.
Strong machinability: It is easy to manufacture tanks of various shapes and sizes through processing techniques such as cutting, welding, and bending. Tanks of different shapes such as vertical, horizontal, and spherical can be manufactured according to actual needs. For example, horizontal tanks can be selected for sites with limited space, while spherical tanks may be more suitable for situations that require high pressure and large storage capacity.
3. Types of steel tanks
Classification by shape:
Vertical tanks: commonly used to store liquids, which are more common in the petrochemical industry. It occupies a small area and is high in height, which can effectively utilize vertical space. For example, crude oil storage tanks in refineries are mostly large vertical tanks.
Horizontal tanks: generally used in situations where the storage capacity is relatively small, or in environments where the horizontal space of the site is relatively sufficient. Its advantage is that it is relatively easy to install and maintain. For example, some small gas stations may use horizontal tanks for oil storage tanks.
Spherical storage tank: Due to its special spherical structure, the force is evenly distributed, and it has obvious advantages in storing high-pressure gas or liquid. It is commonly used for the storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), etc.
Classification by structure:
Fixed roof storage tank: The top is fixed, generally in the form of cone top, arch top, etc. This type of storage tank has a simple structure and low cost, and is often used to store non-volatile liquids, such as diesel, lubricating oil, etc.
Floating roof storage tank: There are two types: internal floating roof and external floating roof. The floating roof can float up and down with the change of the liquid level in the storage tank, reducing the evaporation loss of the liquid. It is often used to store volatile oil products, such as gasoline. In oil reserves, floating roof storage tanks are widely used to reduce the evaporation loss of oil products and reduce safety hazards.
4. Application areas
Petroleum and natural gas industry: used to store various oil and gas products such as crude oil, gasoline, diesel, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, etc. Steel storage tanks can be found in the entire industrial chain, from the production site of the oil field to refineries, oil depots, and gas stations.
Chemical industry: storage of various chemical raw materials and products, such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, various organic chemicals, etc. Different chemical materials have different requirements for the material and internal corrosion protection of the storage tank. Steel storage tanks can meet these special requirements through lining and other methods.
Food and beverage industry: used to store drinking water, alcohol, cooking oil, etc. In these applications, there are strict requirements for the hygiene standards and internal coating of steel to ensure the quality and safety of stored materials.
Other areas: also include sewage storage in sewage treatment, fire water storage in the fire protection industry, etc. For example, in a sewage treatment plant, a steel sewage regulating tank can temporarily store sewage so that the subsequent treatment process can proceed smoothly.
